The dancer Luca Sportelli: from tour in China
to the contract in America

NOCI (Bari) - The dancer from Noci Luca Sportelli came back few days ago to Italy, after a ballet tour of about 15 days, in China, with the Kharkov Ballet (Ukraine) and 12 itinerant performances (6 of “La Bayadere” and 6 of “The Swan Lake”). He danced as soloist, next to dancers like Oksana Skorik and Evgeny Ivanchenko, both principal dancers at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg (Russia), one of the best in the world with the famous Bolshoi. And now a short break in his region Apulia with his family, before leaving again in August for his first real stable work with the company Columbia Classical Ballet (photo protected by copyright).

The chinese tour it wasn’t only a simple ballet tour, but a sort of initiation rite, the overcoming of a challenge, a step forward. “For the first time I felt like a professional”, Luca said, taking a greath breath and remembering how hard it was to climb. “I arrived in Ukraine few weeks before the first show, as the only external dancer called for this tour. I didn’t know what I was going to dance and what to do on stage, and in fact, at the Premiere I did some mistakes with some entrances, but I didn’t give up and I received a lot of compliments of the principal dancers with I danced. I felt like a normal person who was honored to be close to famous people”.

But Luca is not a “normal” person: he is 19 years old and he has already lived in America, the incredible training experience of study at the San Francisco Ballet School, dancing in a tour of 2 months in the United States (November - December 2015) and in China, dancing as soloist in the most demanding role of the entire classical ballet repertoire. Always in China Luca taught in a Workshop in a ballet school and in a few months he will be in Columbia in the classical ballet of the city.

“I feel reborn”, he continues.
Coming back home after a year of study in San Francisco, without any prevision of new adventures, it wasn’t a good thing for the dancer of Noci: however Luca had faith and arrived at the finish line, getting a contract as a professional ballet dancer just at a moment when he did not believe in his chances. In a few months everything changed and the lean crop became full, only and exclusively thanks to its capabilities.

The manager of the Kharkov Ballet Theater chose Luca first in November 2015 as an external dancer for a ballet tour in United States, for the Moscow Ballet and its “The Nutcracker” and then for the shows in China, where Luca was the only external dancer of Kharkov´s company, as well as, the youngest of the whole group. His roles were “the Jester” in “The Swan Lake”, with important entrances in the 1st. and 2nd. act and “the Golden Idol” in “La Bayadere”, with a variation of 3 minutes among the most difficult of the entire classic ballet repertoire, without forgetting the heavy makeup and costumes.

Life in tour was really restrictive: travels, rehearsals – classes – shows from 2 p.m. to late night, change of hotels, unexpected adventures in the city, russians that were asking me why I wasn’t speaking russian, chinese people that didn’t know english. But there was the ballet dance, the satisfaction of finishing my solos in the perfect way, the claps of the audience, the compliments from the two principal dancers who for Luca (and not only for him) are among the best in the world (Skorik better than Zakarova, to be clear by people that understand).

Why are arriving all these appreciations? Why the choice of the only external dancer of the tour fell on the young italian dancer? The questions have had strong and clear answers for Luca Sportelli: the “loading” now is “done”, the dancer is complete and he has just to grow and improve even more.

“Columbia it’s a good company, I am counting of living this experience as much as possible from August to March and then aspiring to a bigger company, the Miami City Ballet, one of the best classic ballet in America”. America still represents “The dream”, and our dancers from Noci always repeat: theater and ballet, there are art, sensibility, but also entertainment and fun for all ages, young people included. The love from fans and the reception of the audience satisfy the spirit and self-esteem, the artist collects what he sowed. It is right that someone like Luca cultivate a project, a future, a great harvest, moving where the soil is fertile and the good fruits are appreciated.
